    A visual analog scale (VAS) is a measuring instrument that attempts to measure a characteristic or attitude that is believed to span a continuum of values and cannot be easily measured directly. It is often used in epidemiological and clinical research to measure the intensity or frequency of various symptoms. For example, the amount of pain experienced by a patient varies on a continuum ranging from zero to an extreme amount of pain.
