Advanced TMJ Disorders: Assessment and Treatment of Orofacial Pain
Advanced TMJ Disorders: Assessment and Treatment of Orofacial Pain

Eligible Clientele
Physiotherapists
Prerequisites
Must have completed at least one basic course dealing with the TMJ, either by Atlas Medic - Maxime Besner, OPPQ - Trudy, or other relevant training.
General Objectives
Consolidate and add knowledge in pathophysiology, assessment, analysis, diagnosis, neurophysiology, temporal bone occlusion, posture, breathing, and swallowing... in order to facilitate integration to treat complex cases.
Refine your diagnosis and analysis of TMJ problems and determine the origin of the problem..
See pathologies other than the TMJ, i.e.: trigeminal neuralgia, orofacial pain, medical and dental differential diagnoses.
Broaden your knowledge to all orofacial and craniomandibular spheres in order to treat the majority of mechanical disorders of the TMJ and other orofacial dysfunctions and surrounding structures.
Specific Objectives
Know and interpret the anatomy of the TMJ, its new developments, its controversies, and its clinical links.
Assimilate new knowledge regarding the pathological biomechanics of the TMJ, the roles of mechanoreceptors and embryology, and their influences on physiotherapy treatments.
Acquire more advanced assessment tools, adding new tests that are more varied than the basic assessment, including: temporal bone, posture, occlusion, teeth, joint noises, fascia, breathing, posture, etc.
Know orofacial neurophysiology, assess relevant cranial nerves, and apply new treatment techniques for lesions of cranial nerves V to XII.
Understand the influence of posture, cervical spine, and breathing on the TMJ and occlusion: ascending system.
Refine your diagnosis: primary vs. secondary, differential hypotheses. List the medical and dental diagnoses of the orofacial sphere.
Contrast diagnostic hypotheses that can then be verified using the assessment tools demonstrated in the course.
Explore the basis of dentistry and orthodontics in relation to the TMJ: the occlusion-TMJ relationship, bruxism, occlusal splints, surgeries, etc.
Explore the basics of sleep apnea, breathing, and swallowing.
Explore the concepts of temporal bone mechanics, the relationship with the TMJ, and correction techniques..
Compose an accurate diagnosis, understand and treat more than 85% of cases of TMJ and oro-facial problems with advice, exercises, referrals, and very diverse manual techniques.
Analyze, evaluate, and diagnose complex case histories appropriately from the end of the course..
Plan a treatment plan compatible with your diagnosis. Add many varied treatment techniques (TMJ, muscles, fascia, temporal bone, hyoid, neural, etc.).
Learn to work well in a multidisciplinary team with dental, ENT, etc. professions.
