Vestibular and Oculomotor Retraining: Assessment and Progression
Simplified theory, practical application: Gain experience with real clinical case studies.
Physiotherapists and physiotherapy technologists who wish to be involved in the assessment and treatment of dizziness and oscillopsia; chiropractors with experience.
Prerequisites
Have completed at least one course dealing with vestibular pathologies and/or concussion management.
General objectives
This training focuses on the reassessment of the patient throughout treatment in order to progress exercises effectively.
It aims to solidify the clinician's potential to optimally monitor their patient and offer them a more efficient progression of exercises by limiting overload errors.
It will allow participants to learn, in a practical setting, to gather information acquired in vestibular physiotherapy and mTBI management courses to better adapt to the patient's condition and make informed choices in order to prioritize certain areas.
In short, understand what we are looking for when we do a test, what we find as a response, and therefore be more efficient in what we give as an exercise in order to better guide the prescription of exercises and focus progression on the functional capacity of the patient.
Specific objectives
Understand the basics of vestibular physiotherapy and the link between information from the inner ear, eye, and mechanoreceptors in both mTBIs and persistent oculomotor and vestibular problems secondary to a classic vestibular pathology.
Review the "red flags" and safety considerations inherent in the management of dizziness and oscillopsia.
Master the subjective questionnaire, understand the relevant information found there, and use it in the implementation and progression of the treatment plan.
Simplify the reassessment process by learning to select tests relevant to the client's condition.
Know how to recognize intrinsic and extrinsic factors in the patient that may influence the difficulty of the exercises in order to limit their impact if necessary or use them at the right time as progression.
Learn to perform an objective vestibular and oculomotor examination and test proprioception and cervical motor control to expose certain important features for the proper progression of exercises.
Acquire, in a practical setting, the tools to better balance the dosage of exercises and thus ensure optimal progression that is varied and adapted to the patient's needs.
Simplify and popularize information acquired in previous courses to be able to make more effective and specific clinical choices.
We recommend to wear short and tank top (for girl) .
